Unlocking Finance for Inclusive Energy Transitions: Whose Futures Are Being Funded?

The World Energy Councilʼs Future Energy Leaders recently gathered in August 2025 at the World Energy Café, in partnership with the Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC), to explore a question that now defines our century: What does it mean to finance an inclusive energy transition?

The timing of this conversation is not coincidental. Global investment in clean energy reached a record $1.8 trillion in 2023. Yet Africa, home to one-sixth of the worldʼs population and the fastest-growing energy demand, received less than 3% of this capital. The paradox is glaring: the continent with the greatest need and the greatest renewable potential remains on the margins of the global financing map.

The discussion was moderated by Ing. Justice Ohene-Akoto, Executive Director of ASEC, who guided the conversation toward actionable strategies for building financing frameworks that are inclusive, equitable, and reflective of Africaʼs future energy needs. On the panel was Karikari Achireko Kwagyan, ASECʼs Director of Corporate Strategy, who highlighted both the challenges and the opportunities in channeling capital toward Africaʼs energy priorities, underscoring the importance of aligning investment flows with the continentʼs development goals.
