Africa Takes Control: The African Energy Bank Opens Its Doors

February 2026 will be remembered as the month Africa made one of the boldest declarations of energy sovereignty in recent memory. On the sidelines of the 9th Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES 2026) in Abuja, Nigeria, the African Energy Bank (AEB) officially handed over the fully furnished headquarters of the African Energy Bank (AEB) to the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO), the institutional body overseeing the bank’s operations. With an initial capitalisation of $5 billion and a mandate to unlock up to $200 billion in midstream and downstream investments by 2030, the AEB represents a structural shift in how Africa funds its energy future.

“The African Energy Bank represents Africa’s commitment to finance, develop, and secure its own energy future by Africans, for Africans.”

— Mamadou Colibaly, President of APPO & Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy
